O gracious light

This is what getting into the car at 6 in the morning looked like today.

O gracious light, O gracious light

I’ve been walking, walking so long in darkness.

When Sandra McCracken stands in front of a coffee shop full of people and asks you to join her on the chorus of her new song, you do.

O gracious light, o gracious light

I’ve been walking, walking so long in darkness.

It was pretty packed out for being the first Local Show, and every mouth was moving, every voice joining in praise and lament. Every person in that little room was singing about their own darkness and surrender to light.

It shouldn’t surprise me, that everyone had darkness to sing about. But in a room full of white, upper middle class Christians in Nashville, Tennessee, the privilege seems like it should overpower the darkness. Perhaps some days it does. But yesterday, every soul in that room had darkness to sing about.

There is darkness in this world, unmistakably. The darkness pervades every life, unquestionably. The darkness is not fair and does not come to everyone the same, but there is darkness in this world.

There is gracious light in this world too, thankfully. I’m not sure the light is fair either, but it pervades every life and every moment and the darkness cannot overcome it.

Sometimes, sitting in a coffee shop with people you love and people you don’t know and singing about darkness and light can be the most staggeringly hopeful moment of the week.

Everyone has been walking in darkness for so long. This does not surprise the light. So we sing to the light and sing of the darkness and we sing together.

O gracious light, O gracious light

I’ve been walking, walking so long in darkness.
